Oakland Airport Reports 11.2 Million Passengers in 2023
A big year for OAK with new airlines, concessions, and facility improvements
Oakland, Calif. – January 29, 2024: San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) reports over 11.2 million total passengers served in 2023, an increase of 0.8 percent compared to 2022. OAK’s cargo totals surpassed 1.1 billion pounds, a decrease of 11.8 percent from 2022. In 2023, OAK focused on customer experience improvements including new passenger concession openings, new airline announcements, and facility improvements for the benefit of East Bay travelers.
“2023 was an exciting year for OAK with new passenger amenities and improvements made to our aviation facilities,” says Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We enter the new year with optimism for what we have in store for 2024, and we thank our community for continuing to Fly the East Bay Way.”
What happened at OAK in 2023?
- Three new airport restaurants were unveiled under OAK’s new Food and Beverage Program. The OAK Clubhouse opened in Terminal 1 and Calavera and Southie opened in Terminal 2.
- The Board of Port Commissioners approved concessionaire agreements for the airport’s new retail program, which will lead to 16 new retail storefronts at the airport in the long term.
- Three new airlines announced OAK service: Avianca Airlines service to San Salvador, SV, Viva Aerobus service to Monterrey, MX, and Sun Country Airlines to Minneapolis-St. Paul.
- Other new nonstop destinations were announced including: Delta Air Lines to Atlanta, Southwest Airlines to Baltimore/D.C., and Spirit Airlines to New York City/Newark.
- Craig Simon was appointed the Interim Director of Aviation.
- The Draft Environmental Impact Report was released for the airport’s proposed Terminal Modernization and Development Project.
- Numerous terminal improvement projects were completed, including the Terminal 2 Security Exit Project, Terminal 1 Carpet Replacement Project, and Terminal 1 Furniture Replacement Project.
- The Taxiway Whiskey Rehabilitation Project Phase 1 was completed.
- OAK received Level 2 Carbon Accreditation from Airports Council International – North America for its reduction of carbon emissions.
What’s in the plans for OAK in 2024?
- New quick-service restaurant Cancun Sabor Mexicano is expected to open in Terminal 1 early this year. Other restaurants coming soon include District, A16, Forge, and Trader Vic’s.
- The Terminal 1 Check-in Counter Replacement Project and Restroom Renovation Project will be announced soon and will refresh the Terminal 1 facility.
- Additional mobile device charging components will be added to the newly installed Terminal 1 gate furniture for passenger convenience.
- Pavement rehabilitation project is planned for the Economy parking lot.
- New fleet of five electric parking shuttle buses are expected to enter service later this year.
- The Airport Perimeter Dike Improvement Project Phase 2 is also expected to begin late this year, which will improve seismic resiliency of the dike.
- The Taxiway Whiskey Rehabilitation Phase 2 will begin in 2024.
